Heavenly Father, We come to you as a thankful people and we thank you for the many blessings in life. We especially thank you for our parish and for the Diocese of Toledo in which we belong. Send Your Holy Spirit upon us, here at All Saints and upon all the parishes in the diocese so that the Annual Catholic Appeal can be successful. Instill in each of us the wisdom to understand that we have been given time, talents, and treasure from God that are meant to be shared with the whole Church. Be with us in our diocese so that we can continue to be evangelizers of Christ; proclaiming, living and celebrating the Good News of Jesus Christ. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Pentecost Sunday (which brings to culmination to the Easter season) is a glorious opportunity to commemorate the descent of Holy Spirit on the disciples and Mary in the Upper Room. They had gathered there in fear. Through the Holy Spirit they were transformed into courageous witnesses of their faith. They were called to go out into the whole world and preach the Good News of Jesus Christ. Some people refer to Pentecost as the Birthday of the Church. Why is that? On Pentecost, the church, (as the Body of Christ) becomes the visible presence of the Risen Lord in the world.
What does all of this mean for us personally? If you allow the Holy Spirit to touch your heart, you are not going to let go. The Spirit will walk with you, lead you, and literally inspire you. Isaiah 62 reads “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me.” Jesus preached this in the synagogue at Nazareth. “He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, liberty to the captives…and a year of favor from the Lord.” As the Body of Christ, through our baptism, we are commissioned for the same ministry. Are we ready?
People should demand the gifts of the Holy Spirit that are right- fully theirs. They should claim the power of wisdom, understanding, knowledge, right judgment, courage, reverence and wonder and awe. These gifts are ones that are meant to be used and shared. Are we willing? This is a day to live our faith to the fullest and to be grateful to celebrate the 2000+ years of our church which has been rich in tradition. We should be proud of not only All Saints but of the Universal Church… proud and grateful to be part of the Body of Christ, the Catholic Church. Rather than find fault or be negative we come to recognize that Christ is still with us, as He promised, living with us and speaking to us in Word and Worship, especially through the Eucharist. Celebrate our “birthday” well today.
